City Beach Residential Landscape Design
This contemporary coastal home sits on a prominent corner block in City Beach, Perth. Our brief was to create a landscape that matched the home's resort-style feel, gave the owners complete privacy, and still gave something back to the street.
We approached the garden as a series of connected outdoor rooms wrapping around the home. The curve of the corner block shaped the whole landscape layout. Along the street edge, a sweeping rendered wall and white slat fence are backed by layered screening planting, creating a green buffer between the pool terrace and the footpath. On the street side, a planted verge and stone driveway paving soften the frontage and help the home sit comfortably in its coastal neighbourhood.
The architect's striking raised mosaic pool is the centrepiece of the garden, and our job was to make the spaces around it feel just as considered. Mounded silver and green planting softens the pool walls, the terrace flows into an outdoor lounge, outdoor kitchen and curved built-in bench with dining setting, and the cabana at the far end is framed by tall screening for a proper sense of retreat. The crazy-paved natural stone picks up on the stone cladding of the house, so inside and outside read as one.
Around the other side, a curved lawn with crisp concrete edging leads to a stone-clad garden bench, framed by clipped hedging and tall screening along the limestone boundary wall. It looks great from the living room and gives the owners a quiet, green spot away from the pool.
The planting palette mixes silver-grey coastal shrubs, clipped greens, low groundcovers and feature trees, selected to handle City Beach's coastal conditions and to give year-round texture against the pale stone and render of the home.
